Knowing which primary colour is behind your colour selection is an important step when choosing colour for your home.
If you have ever been to the hardware store to select white paint for example you will know what I mean. The dilemma of choosing the “correct” white from the multitude available becomes even more confusing when you have others with you. Even once you have made your selection then there are myriad of finishes for each colour eg. semi-gloss, matte or flat colour, shiny or gloss. But that is a whole other story!
There is an easier way to choose colour…
It begins with knowing the primary colours. It is well known that Red, Yellow and Blue are the building blocks of all colour selection. They form not only the secondary colours Green, Purple and Orange but also make up the not so obvious colours of white (inclusion of all colours) and black (the absence of colour).

Choosing the right colour can be made easier by following the warm-cool guide. If the colour leaps out at you it is likely to be a warm colour. If the colour appears more expansive or in the distance then it is likely to be a cool colour. The rule of thumb generally is that Yellow and Red and their combinations of Orange and Brown are said to be warm colours and give a feeling of cosiness. Blue and its combinations of Green and Purple are said to be cooler colours and provide a feeling of calm and are often associated with the sky, objects in the distance or water.
Once you have identified which primary colour you are dealing with it is also important to balance it with a contrasting colour. There is nothing more exciting than to paint in shades of one colour and then use a contrasting colour to highlight your work. Be bold. Trust your intuition. I always find that the best way to select colour and create interest is to use colour that has an emotional connection to you. If you begin with a colour that reminds you of a happy moment such as a childhood memory or a holiday, inspiration can take you the rest of the way. Remember, there is no right or wrong way to express yourself!
