Do Artists have Rules?

15 January 2016 / Art

They say that rules are meant to be broken.  As an artist your creativity is always spiked by doing something different.  It is in the discovery of new ways to look at things that our imagination is stretched.

There are many techniques that can be employed to achieve this such as using a frame to see things differently.    This could be something as simple as cutting out a small square from a piece of card and looking through it to refine a view of an object or its surroundings.   Another way might include viewing the object or subject of your work in a mirror so that the reflection provides you with another perspective.   Even closing one eye can offer a new perspective.

One’s destination is never a place, but a new way of seeing things.

Children are great teachers of new ways of seeing.  Have you ever noticed how a child draws?  Or even how some art can appear ‘childlike’?  Not necessarily because the child or the artist can’t paint an object or its surroundings accurately, but because they want to emphasise what is important about these things.  Perhaps it is the head or other body part or a piece of jewellery or the vessel that it sits in that is important to them.   These things will appear larger or more vibrant or smaller or not even there!  Children naturally create like this.
